As of January 2005, we have become the new co-coordinators of the Philadelphia, County PAGenWeb Project a part of the USGenWeb Project, Philadelphia, County.  It is our desire to continue to help this website grow and to help you make the best of your research endeavors.  Although, we do not conduct individual research, we can direct you to the correct places to visit by looking at some of the links to the right.  Also, the Query section is a great place to post a message about a research problem that you might be having.  With your help and contributions, this site can be a haven for those that seek their family roots in Philadelphia, County. 

The idea of the GenWeb Project arrived when a group of genealogists in Kentucky formed the "Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project" in Spring 1996.  This was to provide a single point of access for genealogy information and research that included all counties in Kentucky.  The Project grew by leaps and bounds and by June 1996, inquiries were coming in from other states with interested volunteers.  In June 1996, the PA GenWeb Project was formed and originally headed by Gary Steiner of the Genealogical Computing Association of Pennsylvania.  The Project is still running strong today.

In 1681, William Penn received a charter from King Charles II of England to start a colony on the Delaware River. In 1682, Penn laid out the first map of Philadelphia County. The map was made up of a grid that consisted of the area from the Delaware to the Schuylkill Rivers to Vine and South Streets (formerly Cedar Street). In 1701, Philadelphia County was chartered as the city of Philadelphia and was re-chartered in 1789. In 1751, part of Philadelphia County became part of Berks County and in 1784 part of Montgomery County. In 1854, all municipal offices within the county consolidated within the city of Philadelphia.
